#HTC One X: Winner or flop? #mobile

20120326-110615.jpg

HTC was one of the biggest competitors a couple years ago, with the HTC Evo 4G, and Nexus One. I’m not saying they aren’t a competitor right now but they have lost their flare in the past 12 months. Motorola and Samsung has stepped up with more devices. Samsung has been pushing their galaxy s II devices, galaxy note, and the Galaxy Nexus. Verizon and Motorola are advertising the heck out of the Motorola Droid Razr and Razr Maxx. HTC is now taking the commitment to bring out the best devices in 2012 with The HTC One Series they introduced in Barcelona last month. So far they have confirmed the HTC One V, S and X. I will be primarily be talking about the big boy of the pack, the HTC One X.

First let’s talk specs on the HTC One X. This device is packing some beastly hardware. On the outside the device is made out a single piece of polycarbonate material. It will come in either white or black ( the white is looking super sexy). It has 4.7″ gorilla glass super LCD 2 display. The resolution is 720p bringing it at 312 pixels per inch. One the back is an f/2.0 8mp lens which can record in full 1080p video. It’s very thin at 0.37 inches. Inside the device is a quad core 1.5ghz tegra 3 chip, 1gb RAM, 32gb of built in storage (no micro sd card slot).

From what I’ve seen in videos and articles on the HTC One X, many journalist are calling this device the best android device to date. If HTC will release this device in time before the Galaxy S III and Apple iPhone 5, then HTC will succeed. If your interested in the One X, it will be released in Europe in April. As for us folks in the United States. AT&T will be carrying the device in the coming months. There is one thing you should know. At&t will be swapping out the quad core chip in return for a dual core s4 snapdragon chip. Now many were initially disappointed but after further testing the s4 chip is faster and more efficient than all dual core chips out on the market and is very comparable to the quad core chip. The reason for the decision is that the tegra 3 quad core chip does not support 4G LTE.

#Android #Google Maps Zoom Limit

A couple of months back, I noticed that the Google Maps app on my LG Optimus One phone couldn’t zoom in as far as it could before (unless my memory is failing me). Below is the maximum zoom level on the phone

This is not the maximum zoom of the Google Maps android application as my ZTE V9 tablet can zoom in much further as shown below
While you may think that this is a trivial matter, it really rises as a problem when I look for tram stops and street names here in Melbourne. Take a look at the CBD of Melbourne in the screenshot below and see how problematic this is: I can’t see the names of the smaller streets and I have to tap each tram stop in order to see the stop name.
To rub salt into the wound, apps that use a map view can zoom in further than the Google Maps application! Below are screenshots via the Domain.com.au app.
I’ve tried to search for a reason for this discrepancy and have yet to find one. The map settings are both the same in the tablet and phone. CPU and RAM-wise, both devices are comparable: 600MHz each with about 420MB of RAM. Both devices are rooted with my Optimus One running the official Android 2.3.3 ROM from LG and the tablet running Android 2.3.7 via CyanogenMod. The only other difference would be screen size and resolution: 7″ 800 x 480 screen on the tablet and 3.2″ 480 x 320 screen on the phone.

2. No IM ( Gtalk, Yahoo, WM )

3. No Voice recognition.

4. Many Chinese apps

5. No Facebook.

6. Emails for gmail, windows ,yahoo has to be manually configured
